For many of us, this has been an alarming andchallenging year as we battle a global pandemicand work through an economic recession. All of ourlives have been completely disrupted.
We extend our deepest sympathies to those aroundthe world who have lost family, friends andcolleagues to COVID-19. Our hearts go out to you atthis difficult time. We also acknowledge thefrustration and pain that comes with knowingsomething as simple as a hug or a handshake couldresult in making someone else sick.
Months into the pandemic, we look back at a crisisthat began for Magna on January 25, when we didthe first COVID-19 test for an employee returning totheir home base from China. That moment was acall to action for us to make a difference in the livesof our employees and the communities in which wedo business. How we have responded reflects whowe are. It defines us as individuals and as anorganization.
Simply put, Magna brought a world-class approachto dealing with the pandemic, enabling thecompany to adjust, adapt and protect ouremployees. Our executive team – Don Walker,Swamy Kotagiri, Aaron McCarthy, Tom Skudutis andthe group presidents – would accept nothing less. Our ingenuity, innovation and best-in-class attitudeallowed us to put a system in place that safeguardsthe health and wellbeing of our employees.
Magna’s Smart Start playbook, with its safetyprotocols and procedures, has become a standardin the industry. Our agility and ability to adapt to thedemands of new mobility also enabled us totransform our factories and offices into placeswhere employees say they feel safer than any otherplace – even their homes.
Just as we have done throughout the darkestdays of the pandemic, we must remainvigilant. Vaccines and new therapies arepossible, but not guaranteed. It is likely thatCOVID-19 will be with us for some time, andthat requires a major shift in mindset andbehavior. Everyone can help by:
-Continuing to follow the Be Smartrecommendations
-Say “Boo to the Flu” by getting a flu shot, something that’s even more importantduring the pandemic
-Take care of your physical and mentalwellbeing
-Avoid social events outside of work
-Show compassion by treating others withdignity and respect
We have taken proactive steps as anorganization so we can be a paradigm forthe right way to handle a crisis such asCOVID-19. Let’s look back on this momentand be proud of the difference we madetogether.
